Latin American/ Caribbean countries developed lower cost labor through the preservation of the hacienda system and continuous use of foreign and Mimi grant workers through Latin American/ Caribbean plantations, even though increasing indenture servitude and increasing of wage labor was becoming more prevalent in the growing cit The Hacienda system in Latin America kept labor costs at a virtually free price by nodding Indians to certain lands by constantly keeping them in debt through out the early modern to modern period.During the early 1 ass's, Herman Cortes after being granted the Spanish crown was given encompass, allowing him access to large amounts of indigenous labor. With the growth of Indian populace by the early sass's, the hacienda sys stem continued in full throttle. Similar processes occurred in Puerco Rich during the time Of Sp anis colonization in which haciendas were created and cheap labor force was used in order to create a greater production of goods. The reason for this continuity is that the use of the hacienda system continued to give Latin America the convenience of nearby indigenous labor for a very cheap price to pay. Foreign and immigrant workers within Latin America from 14501900 were use d to work on plantations and Haciendas, because of the benefit of cheap labor. By the late sass's, Trans Atlantic slave trade began to spark, causing African slaves to be a source of labor. As slave abolition movements began to ignite in the late sass's, it became me less acceptable to continue to have slave labor, so many plantation owners secrete kept slaves with them. However, by the late 1 ass's, slavery was almost non existent, alto ugh due to the increasing popularity of indentured servants in plantations, an element of mix oratory work was still reflected upon Latin American labor force. This continuity exists because of the fact that slaves were cheap, useful, and easily accessible labor that was overall very pr deductive to the purpose of prod ucing items. Indentured labor in the Caribbean was becoming an alternative to slavery quiz cocker as more Europeans began to migrate around the world.During the 1 ass's, slave arrays in a strong position for the Caribbean, but by the time that the late sass's rolled a round, migrating Europeans began to have the choose to become a servant by paying off debt with working on a plantation. A more effective way of labor because the workers are more MO titivated to do more. This change exist because Of the fact that slaves were not needed as m such once more dedicated workers came to do the job. A similar process occurred in American colonies in which indentured workers paid off debts in order to become citizens.Wage labor in Latin America was slowly becoming more prevalent rather than slavery on haciendas. During the 1 60(Yes, wage labor was basically unheard of in this a ere, however during the sass's, wage labor began throughout Latin America. By the sass's, wage labor continued to in crease in haciendas along with indentured labor and was used because of the massive European immigration occurring instead of having to use African Slav sees. This change exists because wage labor is the willingness or agreement to work on a Hacienda and by contract. Therefore, it is by choice, not force.

Artificial Intelligence and the Modern Military

Artificial Intelligence and the Modern Military Wayne K Sullivan Saint Leo University MGT 327, CA01, Management Information Systems Professor Lawrence Mister November 26, 2011 Purpose: In today's military, leaders are continuously seeking ways to incorporate new technology to take the place of human soldiers. It has long been an important goal to be able to remove the human element from the modern battlefield, thus enabling high risk or sensitive political operations to be conducted without the fear of capture or exploitation of US military personnel. One such incident occurred during the Cold War, on May 1, 1960, during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower and during the leadership of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, when a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down over the airspace of the Soviet Union. The United States government at first denied the plane's purpose and mission, but then was forced to admit its role as a covert surveillance aircraft when the Soviet government pro duced its intact remains and surviving pilot, Francis Gary Powers, as well as photos of military bases in Russia taken by Gary Powers.Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been fully integrated within all levels within the Department of Defense (DOD), from software programs designed to efficiently data mine the vast amounts of intelligence collected to complex quantum computing design to monitor and direct operational units in real time on the modern battlefield. This paper will focus only on a few Real world Combat systems currently utilized within the Department of Defense (DOD). Within the Department of Defense (DOD), the word autonomous is equivalent to and often substituted for the term Artificial Intelligence (AI).Autonomous is defined by Webster’s dictionary as; â€Å"Having independent existence or laws† (Webster, 2011) , where as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is defined in the Encyclopedia Britannica as â€Å"the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings. † (Britannica, 2011), both definitions define the overall goal of the DOD, Independent combat systems that increase soldier survivability and become a force multiplier in the combat theater of operations. And is being explored for all branches of the service for uses on land, sea, and air. Background:In today's modern combat arenas, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, the desire for autonomous vehicles and intelligent combat systems is higher than ever. Currently within our armed forces there are numerous combat systems that are experimenting with artificial intelligence, designed to reduce or eliminate the need for combat soldiers on missions or tasks that are considered to dangerous for human operators. These missions or task include Biological or Chemical detection, Explosive Ordinance Detection and Demolition (EOD), High value target identification and covert tracking, and Treat Detection and Neutralization.Art ificial Intelligence (AI) is finally reaching the point where it is now feasible, and is starting to demonstrate its capabilities in the combat environment. AI techniques are becoming so ubiquitous that the computers that now bear the label â€Å"Intel inside† could well be labeled â€Å"AI inside,† says Alan Meyrowitz, director of the Navy Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington (Rhea, 2000).Now, with a combination of military-funded development programs and the availability of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology, the military services are beginning real world implementation. AI methods in such new generations of weapons platforms as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous submersibles to perform unmanned counter terrorism and surveillance operations in shallow water areas, and Fully Autonomous Land Vehicles designed for soldier support as well as search and destroy (Rhea, 2000).United Stat es Army, which is the largest arm of the military by far, in a recent report, has laid out its plans to introduce an upgrade artificial intelligence within its ranks, via a plan integration plan/roadmap from present-day through 2035. Currently the key areas the Army is looking to artificial intelligence are chemical biological detection, counter explosive hazards, security, interdiction attack, and long-range strike capabilities (US Army, 2010).Deployed soldiers have dozens of pounds of batteries, ammo, communications equipment and other Items such as food and water they have to carry on their backs, on top of heavy body armor, encumbering solders with up to 100lbs of additional weight. While this large amount of technology, is useful in combat, it can greatly fatigue solders prior to engagements and can render soldiers severely limited or even ineffective during sustained engagements with the enemy (Knapik, 1989). It is this reason that the U. S. Army is experimenting with a variet y of remotely controlled and even wearable machines to lighten this load. Some are deeply quirky, designed to resemble a headless dog. The spooky Big Dog quadruped robot, which is being developed by robotics company Boston Dynamics, has some of the most advanced artificial intelligence and navigation systems in the planet. In fact, US Army officials are stunned by its programmed behaviors, which make Big Dog extremely helpful in the battlefield. Big Dog can run along soldiers, walk slowly, or lay down to be loaded or unloaded with up to 400 lbs of gear, equivalent to one full squads (6 men) backpacks, all while being aware of the terrain around it.No matter what happens, or how hard it's hit, the robot maintains its course without falling on the ground under any circumstances. The only way to get him off its path is by a major direct hit, which could mean a rocket. U. S. Army Officials are optimistic for this beast. They see it as the most effective way to carry all kinds of material , reducing the weight that soldiers have to tug along, freeing them to move faster and be safer (Diaz, 2009). Another area the U. S.Army is excited about is the compact surveillance platforms that are now available, such as the Skylark I, advanced mini -UAV system, a unique man-pack configuration designed for day and night observation and data collection up to distances of 10-15 km. The mini -UAV system is equipped with an exceptionally quiet electric motor, totally autonomous flight, and outstanding observation capabilities allowing for easy operation and orientation (Keren, 2004). Soldiers can launch the state-of-the-art AI flight system, after a brief training period, usually only one week of computer software training, no pilot skills are required. It features a gyroscopic-stabilized gimbaled payload and a high degree of autonomous flight from take-off to precise recovery, yielding real-time intelligence, the operator simply points the camera to where he wishes to look and the Sk ylark flies there. The Skylark I system has proven itself in cloudy, rainy and windy weather conditions, the Skylark I has demonstrated excellent optical survey, target identification and surveillance capabilities. This configuration, equipped with algorithms derived from larger Hermes UAVs, can track fixed and moving targets, an impressive capability for a hand launched UAV.Skylark I can be used for both defense and homeland security applications including perimeter security, border and coastal surveillance, anti-terrorism surveillance and a variety of law enforcement missions. Skylark I has already accumulated more than 3000 successful operational sorties and is currently operationally active in several theatres of the global war on terror. Skylark I set a new world record in high altitude flights, climbing to an altitude exceeding 16,000 feet and has demonstrated outstanding performance in weather conditions ranging from arctic to equatorial weather.Skylark I is equipped with Elb it Systems' new-generation night payload. Weighing only 700 grams, the thermal payload is the lightest in its class. The payload’s capabilities include very wide area coverage, continuous tracking of moving targets and a higher resolution rate than any of its predecessors (Keren, 2004). Lastly we will examine two of the U. S. Army’s Unmaned Vehicle programs , first the Squad Mission Support System it looks as conventional as any six wheeled hauler you’d see on an admittedly large loading dock, the size of a car with a flat back, readying it to strap up to 600 lbs. worth of equipment onboard. It uses ladar, or laser radar, to identify the unit it needs to follow and drives off autonomously behind (Ackerman, 2011). Secondly is the Crusher, All branches of the United States military services are actively seeking new technology and programs that will limit or eliminate the need to place service personnel in harm's way. And operating and weapon systems become more adv anced, it appears inevitable that someday in the not so distant future, autonomous machines will be performing a large majority of mundane and repetitive task as well as tearing out specialized operations on the battlefield of the future. It is through organizations such as Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), whose mission is to maintain the technological superiority of the U. S. military and prevent technological surprise from harming our national security by sponsoring revolutionary, high-payoff research bridging the gap between fundamental discoveries and their military use (DARPA, 2011). Unlike conventional bits or transistors, which can be in one of only two states at any one time (1 or 0), a qubit can be in several states at the same time and can therefore be used to hold and process a much larger amount of information at a greater rate.A major obstacle for realizing a quantum computer is the complexity of the quantum circuits required. As with conventional compu ters, quantum algorithms are constructed from a small number of elementary logic operations. Controlled operations are at the heart of the majority of important quantum algorithms. The traditional method to realize controlled operations is to decompose them into the elementary logic gate set. However, this decomposition is very complex and prohibits the realization of even small-scale quantum circuits. The researchers now show a completely new way to approach this problem. By using an extra degree of freedom of quantum particles, we can realize the control operation in a novel way. We have constructed several controlled operations using this method,† said Dr Xiao-Qi Zhou, research fellow working on this project, â€Å"This will significantly reduce the complexity of the circuits for quantum computing. † The RQ-4 Global Hawk is a high-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft system with an integrated sensor suite that provides intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissa nce, or ISR, capability worldwide.Global Hawk's mission is to provide a broad spectrum of ISR collection capability to support joint combatant forces in worldwide peacetime, contingency and wartime operations. The Global Hawk complements manned and space reconnaissance systems by providing near-real-time coverage using imagery intelligence or IMINT, sensors. Once mission parameters are programmed into a Global Hawk, the UAS can autonomously taxi, take off, fly, remain on station capturing imagery, return and land. Ground-based operators monitor the UAS's status, and can change navigation and sensor plans during flight as necessary. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt. Jason Tudor Think the U. S. military has a lot of drones now? Just you wait. The Pentagon has just released its 30-year plan for buying and developing warplanes. And in a development that should come as no surprise, the future the military anticipates for its Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps air fleets — toge ther numbering more than 5,500 warplanes — is more robotic than ever. The congressionally mandated Aircraft Procurement Plan 2012-2041 is, of course, filled with conjecture. Any number of factors — fiscal, strategic, industrial or technological — could change nexpectedly, sending ripples through the Pentagon’s carefully-laid plans, currently projected to cost around $25 billion per year. But based on current tech trends (everything always gets more expensive), anticipated (that is to say, flat) budgets and projected threats (China and terrorists, as usual), the military believes it can make do for the next three decades with air fleets roughly the same size as today’s — with just one big exception. The robot air force will double in just the next nine years. The Avenger, or Predator C, is a major upgrade from the earlier versions. With a 41-foot long fuselage and 66-foot wingspan, the Avenger is capable of staying in the air for up to 20 hour s, and operating at up to 60,000 feet. Powered by a 4,800-lb. thrust Pratt & Whitney PW545B jet engine, it can fly at over 400 knots — 50 percent faster than the turboprop-powered Reaper unmanned plane, and more than three times as quick as the Predator. The Avenger should also be much harder to spot – with wings, tails, weapons bays, and sides are all designed to reduce its radar signature. (General Atomics won’t say if it used any of its specialized radar-absorbent materials in the drone, but it’s a fair bet. The new plane might not just take off from land. Designed with folding wings and a tailhook, the latest killer drone could wind up launching from an aircraft carrier, before it attacks it foes. SAN DIEGO, April 12, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC)-built MQ-8B Fire Scout vertical takeoff and landing tactical unmanned aerial vehicle marked a new single-day flight record of 18 hours. U. S. Navy operators achie ved the record using a single aircraft in a series of endurance flights Feb. 25 from the USS Halyburton (FFG 40).Fire Scout is providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance data to support anti-piracy missions while deployed on the ship for the Navy's 5th Fleet. â€Å"We've continually worked with the Navy to enhance Fire Scout since its last deployment to meet these types of operational needs,† said George Vardoulakis, vice president for tactical unmanned systems for Northrop Grumman's Aerospace Systems sector. â€Å"These flights not only demonstrated Fire Scout's maturity, it showed how the system provides a much-needed extension for gathering crucial information during peacekeeping or wartime missions. In April 2010, Fire Scout concluded a military utility assessment on board the USS McInerney (FFG 8), a frigate similar to the USS Halyburton. Fire Scout has flown twice as much in the first two months on board the USS Halyburton than the entire USS McInerney dep loyment. The system also completed initial flight tests on board the USS Freedom (LCS 1) in November. Fire Scout features a modular architecture that accommodates a variety of electro-optical/infrared and communications payloads. These payloads provide ground and ship-based commanders with high levels of situational awareness and precision targeting support.Fire Scout's ability to operate at low ground speeds makes it particularly well suited for supporting littoral missions such as drug interdiction, search and rescue, reconnaissance and port security. Intelligent unmanned autonomous systems includes the multi-role Talisman family of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), which provide a flexible surveillance and protection capability for key facilities and assets, including harbours, inshore mine countermeasures and a range of oceanographic missions. The latest generation Talisman L uses the mission system, proven on the larger Talisman M, and re-packages it into a two man portable s ystem for port and harbor protection and inshore mine counter measures (MCM). It can be deployed from the shore, rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIB) or any platform of opportunity with either low freeboard or a small crane or davit. The system utilises the same control interface as other vehicles in the Talisman family. Talisman L can be operated using a ruggedized laptop or similar portable device. Its open architecture command system also allows its integration with command & information systems aboard naval vessels or land-based vehicles. Data storage on the vehicle is arranged to facilitate rapid mission turnaround and analysis to maintain the tempo of operations. To fly the military's baddest, most technologically advanced planes, you once had to have what Tom Wolfe called â€Å"that righteous stuff† — the willingness to strap yourself to a jet-fuel laden machine and push it to the very limits of its mechanical capabilities.Nowadays, unmanned systems have taken the human danger out of some combat missions, though human pilots remain at the sticks. But not for long. The Navy's experimental X-47B combat system won't be remotely piloted, but almost completely autonomous. Human involvement won't be of the stick-and-rudder variety, but handled with simple mouse clicks. Speaking to reporters at the Sea Air Space convention near Washington, reps from both Northrop Grumman (maker of the X-47B) and the Navy said the X-47B would be piloted not by human handlers in some steel box in Nevada, but by 3. million lines of software code. The rest of its functions will be able to be handled by non-pilot personnel (or your average child), as they will only require clicks of the mouse; a click to turn on the engines, a click to taxi, a click to initiate takeoff, etc. For flyboys proudly boasting their nighttime carrier landing cred, the idea is anathema. But given the difficulty and danger of carrier takeoffs and landings, automating them is one way to ensure saf ety–provided the systems work the way they are supposed to.The X-47B has already taken to the skies from Edwards AFB earlier this year, but this is a Navy plane. As such, it will begin â€Å"learning† the ins and outs of carrier operations via simulated takeoffs and landings starting in 2013. If all goes well, the X-47B could be autonomously showing Navy pilots how to put a multimillion aircraft down on a sea-tossed carrier deck by 2014. Those carrier landings, of course, take a certain kind of touch. Specifically, that of an index finger on a standard issue mouse (Dillow, 2011). On August 11, 2011, DARPA attempted to fly the fastest aircraft ever built. The Agency’s Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) is designed to fly anywhere in the world in less than 60 minutes. This capability requires an aircraft that can fly at 13,000 mph, while experiencing temperatures in excess of 3500F. The second test flight began with launch at 0745 Pacific Time. The Mino taur IV vehicle successfully inserted the aircraft into the desired trajectory. Separation of the vehicle was confirmed by rocket cam and the aircraft transitioned to Mach 20 aerodynamic flight. At HTV-2 speeds, flight time between New York City and Los Angeles would be less than 12 minutes.Cited works: University of California – Santa Barbara. â€Å"Physicists demonstrate quantum integrated circuit that implements quantum von Neumann architecture. † ScienceDaily, 1 Sep. 2011. Code Of Ethics For Teacher Essay

Board for Professional Teachers Resolution No. 435 Series of 1997 Pursuant to the provision of Paragraph(e), Article II,of RA No. 7836, otherwise known as the â€Å"Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994† and Paragraph(a), Section 6, P.D. No. 223, as amended, the Board of Professional Teachers hereby adopts and promulgates the â€Å"Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.† What does code of ethics means? Ethics is hard to define but it is made up of two things.   First ethics refers to well-founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues. Secondly, ethics refers to the study and development of one’s ethical standards†¦ it is necessary to constantly examine one’s standard to ensure that they are reasonable and well-founded. Ethics also means, then, the continuous effort of studying our own moral beliefs and our moral conduct, and striving to ensure that we, and the institutions we help to shape, live up to standards that are reasonable and solidly based. PREAMBLE Teachers are duly licensed professionals who possess dignity and reputation with high moral values as well as technical and professional competence. In the practice of their noble profession, they strictly adhere to, observe and practice this set of ethical and moral principles, standards, and values. Article I Scope and Limitations Section 1. The Philippine Constitution provides that all educational institutions shall offer quality education for all Filipino citizens, a vision that requires professionally competent teachers committed to its full realization. The provision of this code shall apply, therefore, to all teachers in all schools in the Philippines. Section 2. This Code covers all public and private school teachers in all educational institutions at the preschool, primary, elementary, and secondary levels

The relationship between employee rewards and poor motivation in a Essay

The relationship between employee rewards and poor motivation in a Restaurant in the UK - Essay Example Interestingly, the same trend in turnover is also being observed in the United States (US) and in Germany (US Department of Labour, 2010; Endter, 2011). A number of factors were examined in various researches which tackled the issue of employee turnover. Blomme, Tromp, and Van Rheede (2008) suggested that performance rewards may be positive predictors of turnover; whereas, Robinson and Barron (2007) argued that low job satisfaction, not extrinsic rewards, are strongly associated with turnover. Theoretically, however, Jones, et al. (2003) maintained that recognition and appreciation, as well as a system of rewards, are necessary to boost employee motivation. In this regard, Walker and Miller (2010) consider incentive pay, bonuses and even non-monetary rewards to be effective modes of developing motivation, provided that the motivators used are congruent with employees’ needs and desires or that the motivators may be associated to their reasons for working. A look at the motivat or-hygiene or two-factor theory enunciated by Frederick Herzberg in the late 1950s posited that motivating factors are intrinsic elements of a job which lead to the satisfaction of an employee, while hygiene factors are the extrinsic elements of the work setting which cause dissatisfaction of an employee. ... Accordingly, Herzberg’s motivator-hygiene theory considered rewards system (i.e., salary and benefits as job dissatisfier; whereas Jones, et al. (2003) and Walker and Miller (2010) among others, believe otherwise. Moreover, Landy and Conte (2010) underscored the significance of examining the â€Å"level of success with various motivators to know how to increase or maintain work motivation for any individual† (p. 367). It is in the context of Landy and Conte’s assertion that this study is being proposed to investigate the relationship between employee rewards and motivation in a UK restaurant. Informal interviews with several employees in two branches of a restaurant in Bournemouth, UK revealed a prevailing attitude of discontent in their workplace among the staff. The interviewees confided that they are grossly dissatisfied with their pay, but they admitted they can not speak for the others. The series of casual conversations with a few restaurant staff provided the motivation for this proposed study. The research will verify the proponent’s position that there is a significant relationship between employee rewards and motivation among the employees in the two branches of the restaurant from the perspective that there is a positive link between satisfaction with the rewards system and the work motivation of the staff. If this relationship is confirmed, Herzberg’s theory that the rewards system is a hygiene factor and not a motivating factor will be disproved. Consequently, support can be gained for Walker and Miller’s (2010) confident assertion that â€Å"rewards are useful motivators† (p. 196). Staff satisfaction with the performance appraisal system, performance management system and the rewards

Answering Questions - Research Paper Example His ideas about gender roles are therefore reflections of his views of their roles that he develops about them while interacting with them as father, mother, sister, teacher etc. Woolf on the other hand uses her imagination to develop and organize her ideas to compare gender roles before the eighteenth century. While acceding that Shakespeare had the facilitating environment of education, opportunities and support to exploit his potential as a playwright, poet and theatre artist, women were not only deprived of education but were also denied decision making power with regard to their life. Woolf used the concept of male dominant society to imagine the plight of women and stifling of their desire to pursue their dreams. The physical and mental abuse of women has therefore been presented as major factors for the subjugation of women. Moreover, Woolf feels that social dynamics could have forced women to use pseudonyms and many renowned names in the area of art and literature could actually have been women. I do not believe that much has changed since Sanders the time he wrote his essay. The major reasons is that he has contemplated various roles of women, including working women or women could have been abused in relationship etc. as well as men under different situation. While assuming that even if women have become more empowered through education with wider opportunities for becoming financially secure, Sanders believed that men also underwent difficult time and were vulnerable to exploitation by others. Furthermore, essay was written when women were empowered with education and Sanders saw their cribbing as unjustified when men were burdened with more responsibility and subjected to harsher circumstances to maintain their role as breadwinner. Indeed, he believed that circumstances and the way issues are perceived and consequently tackled by individuals becomes critical

Human Subjects - Research Paper Example elinek works in however has never experienced any labour unrests for over thirty years, due to relatively higher payment and better or favorable working conditions. In the surge and increase of the internet, the industry and market as a whole has borne the brunt of change as most of the competitors lost their cutting edge and business or market share to the internet. This is to imply that customers value the retail services that they get from the internet as compared to physical or manual retail stores and shops. On the contrary, the Costco Company has continued to increase and grow in terms of stock price and sales (www.bloomberg.com). In the conventional and simple sense, it is as if the Costco Company has defied business and marketing conventions to realize an increase in its portfolio despite the fact that business and market as a whole is experiencing difficult times in the conventional sense and aspect. According to Craig Jelenik, the company gives better pay and more comfortable working environment where the welfare of the workers is ensured. For instance, Craig Jelenik mentions that people ought to have wages with health benefits ensure s that more money rotates back to the society which in turn would create a healthier nation. He also went ahead to write and advise the congress to increase the minimum wage to $9 an increase from the past level. The main reason as to why he fronts an increase in the minimum wage is so as to ensure that the employee productivity is increased, their loyalty and commitment is unwavering and the turnover of employees is high. Under the prevailing circumstance of labour unrest and demands in pay rise, the Costco Company has continued to give its employees a higher minimum wage as compared to what the government stipulates for minimum pay per hour. For instance, it pays its employees $20.89 an hour as compared to the stipulated wage rate of $9-which other retail stores pays their customers. The researchers demanded and inquired

How to Make a Cake - Training Session Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

How to Make a Cake - Training Session - Essay Example At the end of the training, the learners should have the ability to identify all the ingredients used in the preparation of pancakes and to have the ability to prepare pancakes in different ways according to the unique recipes taught in the training. The objectives are important in influencing the structure of the training process. Just as the name suggests, objectives portray the features the training seeks to achieve thus helping the trainers help tailor the raining materials. In determining the objectives, the trainers look for the nature of the raining thus determining the features it seeks to achieve. In this context, the training session seeks to equip trainees with pancake making skills through numerous recipes. With this understanding, it becomes important for the trainees to understand the ingredients used in the preparation of pancakes and the varied methods used in doing so. Such are intricate factors considered in the development of the objectives of the training exercise. The learning styles will include theoretical and practical features each of which has specific strengths and weaknesses. However, incorporating both methods ensures that they complement each other thus enhancing the success of the training process. Theoretical teaching requires students to attend classes, take notes, and participate in the lectures. The process often provides an effective platform for the trainers to introduce the trainees to the varied courses and the unique features of the training session. This equips the trainees with the appropriate mindset and the inaugural safety and security factors they must consider in order to enhance the success of the training process. A practical session on the other hand includes implementing the theoretical features of the lessons by practicing the process of preparing the pancakes. This requires the students to attend sessions in appropriate laboratories and kitchens fitted with appropriate

Strengths and weaknesses of quasi-experimental designs Assignment

Strengths and weaknesses of quasi-experimental designs - Assignment Example The design is also able to apply selective control on the investigated variables in circumstances where experimental design cannot. The design also has strength in its ability to counter the emerging trend of resistance to randomization. This is particularly applicable when people are involved as participants with consideration of the principle of free consent. While participants would resist randomization into a control group, quasi-experimental design does not involve randomization and is therefore easily acceptable to people. Consequently, sample generation and sampling is easier in a quasi-experimental design (Polit and beck, 2007). Further, the design allows some level of control in the research process that may be used to control expected threats. A researcher can for example control when to collect data to allow room for sufficient treatment effect (Evans and Keenan, 2009). The design, however, has a number of weaknesses. It for example considers many sets of hypotheses that must be investigated by the researcher. This therefore makes it more hectic and probably time consuming than other designs. This is because other possibilities must be explored to consider effects of lack of control. Another significant weakness of the quasi-experimental design, which originates from its lack of a control set up, is its susceptibility to confounds that a researcher cannot explain or account for. In the presence of a control set up, a researcher can identify variations in the control group to make appropriate adjustments to the treatment group and therefore account for the possible confounds. This therefore means that the observed results in the quasi-experimental designs are possibly influenced by confounds. As a result, there is loss of confidence over validity and reliability of results from quasi-experimental designs (Polit and beck,

Report of the essay study based on the Case study

Report of the study based on the Case study - Essay Example This report assesses the marketing issues to be considered in this case scenario and provides recommendations on the strategy that is likely to be most effective in the Company’s present circumstances. The most distinctive opportunity that the Company has is perfecting the new flavours of single malts that it could develop, thanks to its distiller, Ellis Cameron. It also has the opportunity to use its talented salespeople such as the apprentice distiller at the New York marketing event, who could be putting their skills of discerning the subtleties in taste and flavour to good use in maintaining the high quality of Gleanmeadie whisky. The threats the Company is faced with arise from the competition, where other single malt companies may seek to develop distinctive brands of whisky and attract the discerning customer that Glenmeadie may not be able to satisfy if innovation and development of new flavours is not adequately funded. The essential dilemma that the Company is faced with in determining its strategic initiatives is the question of whether (a) the high expense customer centred marketing approach is justified and must be continued or (b) whether the Company needs to pay greater attention to investments in long term strategic initiatives.(c) to what extent innovation and customer research must form a part of company strategy and (d) how the Gleanmeadie brand is to be promoted. The experts who have offered views on Glenmeadie’s present strategy and what future course of action it should pursue, display a wide range of differing options. David Herman suggests that there should be a careful balance between front end initiatives and product development, by developing the single cask bottling which would command higher profit margins and provide consumers with more individual choices. He emphasizes that Glenmeadie’s core brand must remain strong. Jeffrey Rayport suggests that the success of the front end initiatives have not necessarily

Case Study Example Jessica presented case 7 titled ‘It’s not our fault. The case is about two couples who share four children. The family had some unexpressed conflicts and communication problems. Circular questioning, Formula first session talk, scaling and deconstruction were applied before and during the therapy. The therapy was successful and one of the two couples was further referred for couple’s counseling. The case presentation evoked many opinions in the group. Jessica, Teresa, Richard and Keri although were in favor of the therapy applied and the way the case was handled, but they had some differential views when it came to minute details of therapeutic application. Jessica would have added some object relations therapy to improve the relationship of the children with their biological mother. Keri and Teresa agreed with the therapy applied but suggested that Douglas could have been helped with some individual sessions using CBT for reducing his unreasonable and complainant behavior. Richard was of the view that Diane needed more individual therapy regarding the abuse. Matt thought that a strong communication approach would have been helpful since the communication process of whole family was faulty and inadequate. This case is about a two year old boy named Joshua who had constipation due to his parent’s antagonism. The parents, Donna and Nick both lawyers, were not happy with each other and the atmosphere of the home was always tense. After this case was presented, Teresa, Keri and Richard agreed that individual CBT given to both partners would have helped since they refused joint marital therapy sessions, therapeutic work on the personality aspects of each would have been helpful in improving the relationship in an indirect way. Jessica was in a favor of the applied systems approach fully and thought that the case would not have been handled so nicely had the therapist used another approach. Matt believed that play therapy could have

Economics Commentary Essay Example for Free

Economics Commentary Essay BRUSSELS: The European Commission on Thursday announced 5.5 million euros (7.5 million dollars) of emergency humanitarian aid for hundreds of thousands of civilians in conflict-ridden northwest Pakistan. More than 834,000 civilians have now fled a military assault on Taliban fighters holed up in Pakistans rugged northwest, where artillery pounded rebel bastions Thursday. As a result of the intensified fighting in Swat and other parts of the country, Pakistan is facing not only a security threat but also a humanitarian threat, said European Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel. Pakistani authorities are doing their utmost but their relief capacities are now overstretched, he said, announcing the release of 5.5 million euros while adding that more could be provided if necessary. The EUs executive arm stressed that its aid was provided on a neutral basis to provide basic humanitarian needs such as shelter, food, clothes, and medical support. In some places, it will also provide clean drinking water and sanitation. All the funds will be channeled to projects by non-governmental relief organizations, specialized UN agencies and the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement. The European Union plans to hold its first ever summit with Pakistan in June to help strengthen the civilian government there. Among subjects mooted for the summit, provisionally planned for June 17, are the fight against terrorism including in neighboring Afghanistan as well as cooperation in the field of the rule of law and trade issues, according to a Czech EU presidency source. The EU has sent some 500 million Euros in aid to Pakistan since 1976, according to the European Commission, and has quadrupled its funding for the 2007-2010 period, with 50 million euros (65 million dollars) earmarked so far. This article is about the European Union (EU), which also plays an important role in regional development, deciding to provide an aid for Pakistan. Many parts of Pakistan had been taken over by terrorists, Taliban, which resulted in some citizens to move to the northern part of the country. The EU is providing à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½5.5 million and more if necessary. It will be used for basic necessities of life, food, shelter, and clothing; medical support, sanitation, and drinking water would also be provided. The type of which is provided by the EU is an official aid or also known as official development assistance (ODA); it is a mix of bilateral and multilateral aid. Multilateral aid is when organizations allocate funds provided by the countries and bilateral aid is when the aid is given directly to the country in need in the form of for example money support, machinery, tools, food, and medicine. In order to develop, Pakistan needs money and the EU is supplying them with the official aid through the organization of the Red Cross. This aid will result in developing not just the basic needs of the people there, which is proper sanitation and basic necessities of life, but also help strengthen the government, the civilian government. In order for development to take place, a few factors need to be kept in mind: Human factors, natural factors, physical capital and technological factors, and also institutional factors. In this case, the human factors and the institutional factors are kept in mind for Pakistans development. Human factors are the quality and/or quantity of human resources. The consequences of providing the civilians with better sanitation and food, shelter, medicine etc would be that they would have a better standard of living; lesser amount of people would fall ill and that would mean more amount of labor, which is an economic benefit. This would add to the potential output due to the increase in productivity as more people would be there to produce for the economy of Pakistan. In Graph 1 it shows the potential output of Pakistan at point B and point A represents the current output of the economy. In Graph 2, the potential output of Pakistan increased to point C due to the aid provided. These graphs show that the result of aid could increase the current output to point B because of increase in resources due to development, and potential output to point C. The amount of labor does not jus increase by proper food and health facilities but also by education and infrastructure, which is the internal skeletal of the economy, for which there has to be political stability, which are the institutional factors of an economy. The EU has also included aid for improving the civilian government. The civilian government, once recovered, can help in improving infrastructure and education systems by implementing new laws, policies and goals. This could also help increase the amount of security for the people in economy and also help recover land from the areas which are taken over by terrorists. Infrastructure provides the basis for an economy. It includes things such as road networks, sewage system, health, education. Enhancing the infrastructure would make the people in the economy better and more advanced labor. Education would help increase the amount of skilled labor which would, again, help develop the economy by helping increase the amount of physical capital and technological factors; these are social benefits to the economy. Better health would result in longer life span, more productivity and an increase in literacy rate would provide the economy with better skilled workers, increase productivity, and awareness. Poor sanitation, sewage system, can result in many deaths, which would be a negative impact on the economy as there will be a decrease in labor. In conclusion, the official aid given to Pakistan will help the economy towards progression. I will help by improving the economys human and institutional factors. By improving the civilian government, it would also make it a safer place for the normal citizens especially from the terrorist attacks. There will also be an impact on the law and order in the economy of Pakistan due to the aid given. The political stability can also improve. These would result in the overall development of the economy.

Causes of the Charkha Dadri Mid-Air Collision

Causes of the Charkha Dadri Mid-Air Collision Introduction On 12th November in the year 1996 over the village of charkha Dadri, the fateful charkha Dadri mid air collision, involved two Saudi Arabian airlines Boeing 747-100B that was en route to Dhahran from New Delhi, and a Kazakhstan Airlines IIyushin II-76 that was en route to Kazakhstan from Shymkent (Cooper 2). The crash caused total fatalities of 349 people who were on board in the two planes with no survivors making it the world’s deadliest mid air collision and the deadliest aviation accident to occur in India. The accident was rated as the third- deadlist aircraft accident in the history of aviation behind Tenerife airport disaster and Japan Airlines (Cooper 4). Facts about the accident According to the investigations carried out the Boeing 747-100B from Saudi Arabian airlines, which was registered as HZ-ALH (SVA763) was flying from Indira Gandhi int’l Airport Delhi India to Dharan international airport Dhahran Saudi Arabia with 289 passengers and 23 crew member making it a total of 312 people on board (Burns 3). The second aircraft wasUN-76435 (KZA1907) a llyushin II-76 operated by the Kazakhstan airlines flying from Shymkent int’l airport to Indira Gandhi int’l Airport with 27 passengers and 10 crew members making it a total of 37 people on board. The SVA763 departed from New Delhi at 18:32 local time while the KZA1907 was at the similar time descending to make its landing at New Delhi (Burns 2). The two flights were under the approach controller VK Dutta. KZA1907 was cleared to go down to 15,000 when 74 miles from the airport while the SVA763 which was also travelling on the same airway but in the opposite direction was also cleared to ascend to 14,000 feet eight minutes later (Burns 4). At 18:40 local time KZA1907 gave a report to have reached its assigned altitude of 15,000 feet but was lower at 14,500 feet at was still descending (Burns 2). When the controller Dutta called the KZA1907 again he received no reply, he tried to warn of the other flight’s distance but the timing was too late. The two aircraft collided where the tail of KZA1907 cut through the SVA763’s left wing and the horizontal stabilizer. The crippled Boeing after being hit lost control and went into hasty descending twisting motions towards the ground with a huge fire trailing from its hit wing (Ashraf 3). Due to the stress in the air the Boeing broke up in air before the wreckage hit the ground with an estimated speed of 1,135km/h. Owing to the speed that the plane was descending with it was almost impossible for anyone to survive the crash. On the other hand the IIyushin remained structurally unbroken as it went in a firm but fast and hysterical dive until it crashed in the field (Cooper 4). After the arrival of the rescuers, they discovered four critically injured passengers from the IIyushin carried first aid and rushed them to the hospital. The four injured later died due to the fatal injuries they succumbed. Connectively, other two passengers from the Saudi flight also were found to have survived the fatal crash as they were still strapped to their seats on the wreckage aircraft. However, due to internal injuries the two passengers also died soon after the rescue (Burns 3). Thereby making it that there were no any survivor from the mid air collision as all the passengers and crew members in the two aircrafts died. According to the only eye witness to the accident, Captain Timothy J who is a pilot attached to the United States Air Force, he described the event as fatal where he saw a huge cloud that was lit up through an orange flame. The crash happened about 60 miles west of Delhi , the Saudi aircraft crashed near Dhani village which is in Bhiwani district while the Kazakhstani aircraft wreckage hit near Borohar village in Rohtak district (Ashraf 3). Human Factors After the investigations were carried out the Saudi Arabian airline took its Boeing 747 cockpit equipment to London England rather than India while the Kazakh place was taken to Moscow. The ultimate failure was attributed to the Kazakhstan airlines flight 1907’s pilot neglecting to follow the ATC instructions. Alternatively, whether there were cloud turbulence or communication problems (Ashraf 2). According to the commission of inquiry that was set up to establish the main cause of the accident, it was concluded that the accident main cause was the fault of the Kazakhstani II-76 Commander who as per the FDR evidence had descended from his assigned altitude of 15,000 to 14, 500 feet and afterwards even lower. It was due to breach of operating procedure which every pilot is expected to follow without deviation as it gives guidelines on how to steer the aircraft. The report also indicated that deficient of English language experience on Kazakhstani aircraft pilot’s part si nce they were entirely, dependent on their radio machinist for connections with the ATC (Cooper 4). Another factor that contributed to the crash in the Kazakhstani aircraft was that the radio operator did not have his own flight instruments he had to look over the pilots’ shoulder for his to access the reading. According to the report from the Kazakhstani officials the aircraft had descended while the pilots were fighting turbulence inside a thick cumulus clouds. It was also established that Indian air controllers also were complaining that pilots from Kazak occasionally, puzzle their calculations since they are familiar to using the metric structure to standardize height and distance. Kazak pilots normally use different methods of calculation while the rest of the world use nautical miles and feet (Burns 4). It was also established that the Kazakhstani 1907 radio operator discovered that they were not flying at the assigned 15,000, feet and requested the pilot to ascend further. The captain issued instructions for full throttle and the aircraft ascended a little only to hit the oncoming Saudi planes. It is always said that the Kazakhstani pilots had failed to climb slightly, their aircraft would have slightly passed beneath the Saudi plane (Burns 11). Moreover, the Indira Gandhi international airfield did not have secondary surveillance radar as required by aviation laws. The radar is used in providing extra data for example the aircraft’s identity and height by reading the transponders signals. Additionally, the New Delhi civilian airspace had one air corridor for arrivals and departures, most airports separate departures and arrivals into separate corridors this was since the rest of air space was taken by Indian Air Force (Ashraf 6). Conclusion After the Charkhi Dadri mid-air  collision recommendations were made for the airspace and the airport so that they could avoid such future catastrophe among them were installation of secondary radar in the air port. Secondly, a mandatory collision avoidance equipment n all commercial aircrafts operating in Indian air space and reduction of airspace over New Delhi which was initially under the Indian air force. The Kazakhstani pilots were also to be retrained in using world wide readings of nautical miles and feet so as they can be as the rest of world wide pilots. Works cited Ashraf, Syed F. The Two Faces of Man Exposed in The Lord of the Flies Essay -- Lord of

The Two Faces of Man Exposed in The Lord of the Flies  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚         William Golding was inspired by his experiences in the Royal Navy during World War II when he wrote Lord of the Flies (Beetz 2514). Golding has said this about his book: The theme is an attempt to trace the defeats of society back to the defects of human nature. The moral is that the shape of society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently logical or respectable. The whole book is symbolic in nature except the rescue in the end where adult life appears, dignified and capable, but in reality enmeshed in the same evil as the symbolic life of the children on the island. (Epstein 204)    In the novel he displays the two different personalities that mankind possesses, one civilized, the other primitive. Golding uses the setting, characters, and symbolism in Lord of the Flies to give the reader a detailed description of these two faces of man.    The story's setting is essential for the evolution of both sides of man. When an airplane carrying a bunch of school boys crashes on an island, only the children survive. The island the children find themselves on is roughly boat-shaped (Golding 29; ch. 1). It is ironic that the children are stuck on an island shaped like the thing that could save them (a boat). Despite this irony, they are trapped. They are surrounded by ocean and no one knows where they are. The boys, isolated from society, must now create their own.    The children soon realize that there are, "No grownups!" (Golding 8; ch. 1) This means that the boys must fend for themselves until they are rescued. There are no parents or adults to give the boys rules or punish them i... ...etz, Kirk H., ed. Naked Lunch :: Naked lunch Essays

Naked Lunch Naked Lunch has been described by the author as "brutal, obscene, and disgusting." It was declared "obscene, indecent, and impure... and taken as a whole... predominantly prurient, hardcore pornography and utterly without redeeming social importance," when brought to trial in Boston in 1965. However, declaring William Burroughs' novel to be completely without redeeming social importance seems inaccurate. Naked Lunch paints a vivid portrait of addiction in all its horror, and of the steady degradation of the addicts around whom the novel centers. Burroughs titles his introduction "Deposition: Testimony Concerning a Sickness." He believes that addiction is a sickness, and feels that addiction should be treated as a physical disorder, not a psychological one. The body of the novel is not pornography; it is not pointlessly graphic and obscene. Rather, it uses its brutality and obscenity to portray the destructiveness of addiction. Though it contains detailed descriptions of drug use and even outlines how to use many drugs, it is not a manual for drug use. Rather could be taken as a warning against the usage of such drugs. The novel gives a detailed description of the horrific consequences of addiction, as well as a warning: "Look down LOOK DOWN along that junk road before you travel there and get in with the Wrong Mob... A word to the wise guy" (xlv). The novel warns against addiction, against using the drugs described within. As a warning against drug use and a study of addiction, Naked Lunch has both social and scientific value. During the Boston trial, writers Norman Mailer, Allen Ginsberg, and John Ciardi all testified on behalf of the novel, asserting its literary importance. When the book was declared not to be obscene by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, the decision was based on the fact that a "substantial and intelligent group" within the literary community believed that the novel had literary significance (394). In light of its being considered to have not only redeeming social value, but redeeming scientific and literary value as well, Naked Lunch cannot be declared obscene in the legal sense.

Free Hamlet Essays: Complex Hamlet :: GCSE English Literature Coursework

Complex Hamlet There are many factors that lead Hamlet into putting himself in a difficult position. There are many incidents where it’s not Hamlet’s poor attitude that gets him in trouble, but his great ambition to uncover the truth. Once Hamlet discovers that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are spying on him, he never lets them out of his sight. Hamlet suspects that his mother, Gertrude, was an accomplice for the murder of his father. Polonius was slain by Hamlet who had mistaken him for Claudius. His pretense of madness drove Ophelia to her death. All of these incidents show that its Hamlet’s great ambition to uncover the truth that gets himself in difficult positions. Hamlet would not show mercy even when confronted by his best friends from his childhood. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were sent by the King and Queen to spy on Hamlet to discover the reason for his disturbing behavior. Hamlet isn’t fooled by their sudden arrival and gives them a chance to show their loyalty to him by admitting they were sent by the king. "That you must teach me. But let me conjure you by the.... be even and direct with me whether you were sent for or no." (II-ii.274-278) Hamlet is aware of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s alliance with the king. He sends them to England, replacing the letter that they carried with a forgery of the king’s seal stating that the bearers of the letter should be killed. He felt no guilt or remorse for the sudden loss of his two best friends. "They are not near my conscience; their defeat does by their own insinuation grow." (V-ii.58-59) Hamlet’s curiosity caused him to not only suspect his mother, but also kill poor Polonius. He believed Gertrude was an accomplice in the murder of his father.Hamlet has violent outbursts towards his mother. His anger increased as Gertrude misinterpreted the situation. She believed that she was in danger of being assaulted and therefore cries out for help. Hamlet, who was full of rage, runs his dagger through the arras and kills Polonius, mistaking him for Claudius. "O me, what hast tho done/Nay, I know not. Is it the king?" (III-iv.27-28) Hamlet's passion was furiously aroused, and his words to his mother grew increasingly bitter and sharp. His words acted like daggers that shattered Gertrude's peace of mind. "Nay, but to live in the rank sweat of an enseamed bed, stewed in corruption, honeying and making love over the nasty sty.

Disadvantages of monopoly Essay

†¢ Higher prices and lower output Monopolies often mean that prices will be higher and output lower than is the case for an industry where competition prevails. Firms in one industry are producing under conditions of perfect competition, while the other firm is operating under conditions of monopoly. The costs of production are the same for each industry. †¢ Excess profits High profits made by the monopolist are not necessarily an indication of efficient methods of production. The monopolist may, in fact, be using its market power to raise prices above marginal costs in order to increase its revenues. †¢ Higher costs and x-inefficiencies Under competition, firms strive to minimize their inputs to produce a given level of output. Firms do not necessarily have to produce at the minimum efficient scale to be technically efficient, as long as they produce at the lowest costs for their given scale of output. Firms which produce on the average cost curve are technically efficient or x-efficient. In other words, they produce at the lowest cost possible given their respective sizes. Competition normally implies that firms will be x-efficient. However, if firms are insulated from competition, as is the case for monopoly, then there is less incentive to minimize costs. Firms may instead adopt ‘expense preference’ behavior by investing in activities to maximize the satisfaction of senior managers, at the subsequent sacrifice of profitability. †¢ Price discrimination Monopolists as sole suppliers can discriminate between different groups of customers (based on their respective elasticity’s of demand) separated into different geographic or product segments. A monopolist can practice price discrimination in several ways: †¢ First-degree price discrimination. Often referred to as perfect price discrimination, this involves the monopolist charging each customer what he or she is willing to pay for a given product. By doing this the monopolist can increase revenue and erode any consumer surplus which consumers might enjoy. †¢ Second-degree price discrimination. The monopolist charges customers different prices based on their usage. In other words, consumers might be charged a high price for initial usage, but lower prices for subsequent units consumed. This type of pricing has been used in industries such as electricity, gas, water and telephony. †¢ Third-degree price discrimination. In this case, the monopolist separates customers into markets based on different demand elasticity’s. Customers with inelastic demand are charged higher prices than those with elastic demand. †¢ Restrictive practices Monopolists often use unfair practices to keep potential rivals out of the market. Even if rivals are successful in entering the market, the monopolist may choose to eliminate these firms by various restrictive price and non-price strategies such as predatory pricing and vertical restraints. †¢ Limited technical progress Some evidence suggests that technical progress is often slow when a single firm or group of firms dominates an industry. As they face no real competitive pressures, monopolists are under no real pressure to spend any abnormal profits earned on research and development of new product and processes, which is often seen as a risky investment. Consequently, technical progress in these industries is likely to be slow. Reference: http://classof1. com/homework-help/economics-homework-help/.

Third person narrative has been used effec tively, it gives the reader the story from different points of contemplate which brings out different things in characters which you may not have got otherwise. Lennie and Isaac are amazingly similar they are both people anyone I believe provide associate to in some way or another. Neither of them are come outicularly beadlike especially Lennie who suffers from an unspecified illness. They both want different lifestyles. Lennie wants to tend the rabbits and Isaac wants to get marital. They are in very different deal at the start and the whole way throughout the books, Isaac living with his mother and having her permit and Lennie having no family. George is not really the same kind of support. Lennie looks upon George as a friend not a parent figure. Steinbecks way of developing characters is similar to Collins. He tries to make the characters seem as pictorial as possible. He gives them each their own way of doing things. The way Steinbeck has done it makes you want to read o n because you feel scalelike to the characters and you almost feel a part of them and you experience there emotions and thoughts.Lennie has a disability, which affects his speech, and this I regain is the reason for such pitiable sentences from him. I do not think he has the intelligence to put unneurotic a large sentence. A some examples of his dialogue, I am not takin it away jus for meanness and I aint gonna say nothin. Using slang, colloquialisms are effective because it makes it a bit more than realistic. It is using terminology, which the characters would have done. Some examples of this are I think Curleys married a tart said by Candy or an live of the full-bodied of the land said by Lennie. It is all part of developing a character you have to get every characteristic right.Collins describes Mrs Scatchard with words that describe the mother. He uses positive descriptions with words like intelligent. She is a typical mother person who looks out for her son and tri es to do the best for him. We know she is quick and witty unlike her son because when Isaac comes to her with his hassle she takes down a description of the girl and puts it away. It is almost like she knows that Rebecca is going away to turn up. We have learnt that she is very happy being a mother and loves her sons very much, she has fallen on hard times but still marches on she is determined to do her best for herself and her son. She is unendingly there if he has a occupation he has we have a problem in the story of Rebecca being part of her sons life.George in Chapter one is described as an exact paired to Lennie. George has all the qualities that Lennie does not have. George has a hard time looking after Lennie. He finds all the food, work and shelter. He keeps Lennie in order taking things like exsanguinous mice away from him. George and Lennie are equally as close as Isaac and Mrs Scatchard. They both numerate on the more intelligent one of each pair they seem to be abl e to overcome a mess when they both work together.Collins makes us feel sympathetic with Rebecca, the first time you actually meet her he describes her as a poorly dressed charwoman. I think he is onerous to mislead us he is making Rebecca look harmless when she is really a murderer. Our suspicions are aroused when Mrs Scatchard meets Rebecca and she wants to see the theme with the description on. Physiognomy has been used when Mrs Scatchard reacts to Rebecca. She treats Isaac with respect at first so that she can get close to him and lead him up to marriage. When she got close to him her attitude changes completely, she becomes violent towards Isaac it is like she wants to marry him for money then bolt down him off. Isaacs mother stays the same the whole way throughout she continues to be supportive, she plays the mother figure.Rebecca is a very cheapjack character she plays the nice she plays the innocent accountable adult to get really close to Isaac. When Mrs Scatchard m eets Rebecca, she realises before Isaac that this person is really the person out to the dreams. Then Rebecca seems to use that as a turning point in her attitude towards Isaac. She becomes emotionally unstable and goes on the rampage with violence and hatred. We are introduced to Curleys wife when she wonders into the bunk house. They are both considered as no go zones. George gives her a negative picture where as Lennie when he is in the stable playing with the birth thinks she is a nice person.Lennie is just as well as dumb to take on peoples real personality but he seems to charm people with him manor and people are nice back to him. Our reactions to Rebecca and Curleys wife are very different. Rebecca we start to not like because we see her turn from good to evil or from loving Isaac to wanting to kill him. Curleys wife on the other hand we do feel sorry for because she has no one to talk to nor anyone to socialise with, she is evaluate to just amuse herself and live in her own little word. Rebecca does deceive Isaac, she puts on a false character, which is the ideal person for Isaac to love and to hold, but then she changes her character completely, everything about her seems to change her behaviour, her attitude towards Isaac and they way she does everyday chores.Victorian writing was all about whodunit or melodrama. This is surely present in The bridegroom. The mystery in this text revolves around the reaching of Rebecca. Melodrama I do not think is present that much in this text. Melodrama is all out over exaggerating movements and there is not much of this. When you try doing some background research into The Ostler, it is almost impossible. If you do some research into Collins, it always refers to his more famous pieces of writing. He does create latent hostility very well by having Rebecca on the loose and having Isaac on the run. Collins is like Steinbeck he gives you an amazing wealth of intimacy about each character. He gives them a ve ry life like personality.Steinbeck set his book in the 30s, so it is obviously a lot more modern and up to date. He has set his book just outside Weed and as the author is American, he can relate to their way of life. He sets it just after he Great Depression and it was probably set on two real characters at the time. I think that the level of suspense is equally as high in Steinbecks newfangled because you do get signs on what is going to happen but you dont know when they are going to happen. This is because they have their dream and it comes so close. It is very made because it makes the reader want to read on. It gives runty hints about what is going to happen If you get into any trouble come and spread over by river and wait for me but it doesnt make it clear what is going to happen. This makes the book more kindle and it makes you want to read on.The aim in Of Mice and Men was I think to show readers the lives of two normal everyday people after the depression and the rec overy. I think Steinbeck would have create verbally this to tell people what going through the depression was like and how much of a struggle it really was. The Ostler is really a mystery and I do not think there is really an aim to this book. Collins may have written this to show the readers an example of life in the 19th Century and clothed a story into it to make it interesting. I preferred Of Mice and Men only because I felt I could relate more to it. I have seen these ranches in work just outside Weed which also made the story more interesting whilst reading it. It seemed to be a more normal text with things which definitely could have taken place, where as in The Ostler we dont know where it is set or any other tombstone details. The stories both portray two less than bright individuals who survive in life. I believe Lennie Smalls is les cleaver than Isaac Scatchard due to Lennie requiring George to live. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck and The Ostler by Collins Dreams p lay a crucial role. Lennie used dreams as a way of inspiration where as Isaac Scatchards life was dictated by a dream he had, had in a hotel.
